Greg Jones, longtime mechanic at San Francisco’s famed Luscious Garage, wrote the book on hybrid repair — literally.
Jones recently shared that knowledge with instructors and staff from City College of San Francisco and nearby George Washington High School.
With funding provided to CCSF through the California Energy Commission, Jones lead a three-day training session on campus just prior to the start of the fall semester. The training was drawn from his decades of experience working on hybrid vehicles. At Luscious Garage, he is responsible for maintenance and repair of San Francisco’s hybrid taxi fleet.
The training was based on failed hybrid parts Jones brought with him. Instructors worked through diagnosis and are now able to pass that knowledge along to their students using those same parts.
August Barone, Automotive Instructor at CCSF said, “I enjoyed the hands on approach to the various modules as well as the theory presentation on the Hydrogen Cell Vehicles. I now feel more confident to present the material to my students both in the classroom as well as in the lab.”
Jones also provided a 170-page book that he made to document some of the things he’s encountered over the years. The book includes real-life problems and solutions, things that are hard to come by in textbooks that tend to be filled with theory.
“The influx of new printed materials is essential to the growth of the CCSF Hybrid/ EV program. Students currently enrolled in the CCSF Intro to Hybrid class are reading portions of Greg’s presentation as homework,” said CCSF Automotive Instructor Nick Rothman. “The new materials and photos are based on real world failures. Such materials and information are not available from our textbook publishers.”
