Here’s a look at how Cerritos College is using CEC funding to make an impact on prospective students in their areas.
Cerritos College has been so successful in its outreach that the college is looking to hire someone who will be specifically focused on recruiting.
David Roper, an instructor in the college’s automotive department, said those duties are currently split among instructors, who are also being asked to teach more classes to meet increased demand.
“We want to hire someone who will have recruiting as their main job,” Roper said. “They can take what we’ve been doing and make it their own.”
The Chevy Bolt purchased through the CEC funding is a key part of the college’s recruiting strategy. Roper said students love seeing it at their schools and having the opportunity to explore it while it is there.
“We pop the hood and ask the students to find where the gas tank is,” Roper said. “They’re always surprised when we tell them they can’t find it because it doesn’t exist.”
Cerritos representatives regularly participate in college fairs and career nights at high schools in the Norwalk area. They also set up booths at car shows and other local events in an effort to reach adult students and people from the community who might be interested in taking classes to learn more about cars.
