As anyone who has worked with autonomous vehicles knows, the regulation process is complicated.
A new initiative announced by Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao aims to change that.
The “Ensuring American Leadership in Automated Vehicle Technologies: Automated Vehicles 4.0” — or AV 4.0 for short — will streamline policies across 38 federal departments, independent agencies, commissions, and executive offices of the president.
The program will also provide high-level guidance to state and local governments, innovators, and all stakeholders on the U.S. government’s approach towards self-driving cars and other vehicles.
“AV 4.0 will ensure American leadership in AV technology development and integration by providing unified guidance for the first time across the federal government for innovators and stakeholders,” Chao said while unveiling the program at CES 2020 in Las Vegas.
AV 4.0 establishes federal guidelines for prioritizing safety and security, promoting innovation, and ensuring a consistent regulatory approach in an effort to position in the United States as a leader in autonomous vehicle technology.
“AV 4.0 brings all of the important work happening on automated vehicle technologies across the federal government under one unified approach,” said U.S. Chief Technology Officer Michael Kratsios. “The federal principles help foster an environment for innovators to advance safe AV technologies and put the U.S. in a position of continued leadership in the future of transportation.”
The initiative will also outline opportunities for collaboration, including federal investments in the AV sector and resources for innovators, researchers, and the public. The program builds on AV 3.0, released in October 2018, and AV 2.0, released in 2017.
