In order to serve students effectively and continue growing, community colleges need a steady pipeline of instructors.
Katie Mishler, ATL Regional Director for Los Angeles, recognized this need and organized a series of workshops to give automotive professionals the skills, structure, and confidence to deliver not-for-credit ATL instruction at Long Beach City College and Cerritos College.
The free training program was held at LBCC’s Pacific Coast Campus throughout September and October and taught by LBCC automotive instructor Greg Ling. Sessions were held on Saturdays to accommodate the schedules of working professionals and included 64 hours of instruction.
“We wanted to give faculty an opportunity to utilize new technology they might not have access to in their classrooms, and also encourage those from the industry who were interested in teaching at the community college level. These opportunities gave those from industry their first exposure to teaching and classroom curriculum,” Mishler said.
Classes included:
- CNG Cylinder Safety Inspection
- ISL-G Diagnosis and Repair Levels 1 & 2
- INSITE for Cummins CNG/LNG Systems
- Digital Volt Ohm Meter
LBCC is getting ready to offer classes as part of Sunburst Youth Academy, some of which will be taught by participants in the train the trainer sessions.
The instruction went very well, and there was a great response from the students,” Ling said. “I’m glad to support and to be a part of the program.”
