The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects jobs in logistics to grow by 26 percent by 2020. And, automation means that existing jobs are going to change faster than ever. Education and training are critical to solving both of these problems.

The Advanced Transportation and Logistics Sector is working with the Global Trade Sector to identify training opportunities and career paths to help fill these needs. One such effort the sectors are looking to promote and grow is the Port of Long Beach Maritime Center of Excellence developed by Long Beach City College (LBCC) and the Port of Long Beach. The program is now accepting registrations from community members who are interested in the global logistics and supply chain industries. Read More →

As electric vehicles continue to become more mainstream, so too are electric school buses.

That means school districts and others need qualified technicians to work on them.

To help meet that demand, American River College is partnering with the Twin Rivers Unified School District to create an electric school bus repair program that high school students can take for credit at the college.

The Twin Rivers Unified School District received a grant for 16 electric school buses in 2017. Tim Shannon, the district’s director of transportation, met with Craig Weckman, department chair of collision technology and diesel technology at American River College, to discuss how to deal with a lack of technicians well-versed in electric vehicle maintenance coupled with an increase in related job opportunities that looms on the horizon. Clean transportation is a priority in Southern California, and students around the state are stepping up to the plate to work on the next generation of low- and zero-emission vehicles.

California Energy Commissioner Janea A. Scott and staff visited four Southern California high schools October 16 and 17 to meet students who will soon be building a Switch Electric Vehicle purchased for each school through a grant from the Energy Commission. The project is a collaboration between the high schools and the Cerritos Community College District’s Advanced Transportation Technology and Energy Center.

The Energy Commission provided funding to 12 high schools across the state to increase career awareness in the clean fuels transportation field –focusing on schools serving underserved communities, minority groups, and regions impacted by poor air quality.

Victor Valley College Supports Two Newly Funded High Schools

While the Clean Fuels Transportation Pilot Project funded by the California Energy Commission provides high schools with funding for equipment, curriculum and training, there is also an important role for community college partners. In the Inland Empire/Desert region, Victor Valley College has the opportunity to support two newly funded high schools, Adelanto High School and Victor Valley High School.

Victor Valley has strong ties with all nine of its feeder high schools, which produce about 25 percent of enrollments in its automotive programs. Automotive Instructor Steven Coultas took over outreach efforts three years ago and is working to increase that number through several recruitment and engagement strategies.

It Started Out as a Retirement Project…

What started as a retirement project for Peter Oliver has turned into a rapidly-growing business that’s bringing alternative fuel vehicle technology to students around the world — including several California Community Colleges and high schools.

…and Turned Into a Rapidly Growing Business.

Peter Oliver co-founded The Switch Lab, maker of the Switch vehicle, in 2009. At the time, he was teaching at Santa Rosa Community College and had a business converting high-end cars from gas to electric power. The business did well financially, but Oliver said he felt a desire to do something that would have a broader impact.

Training Program Brings Clean Fuel Technology to Underserved Students

Posted by leephillipsdesign
· February 27, 2019

Communities throughout California are suffering from poor air quality and a lack of resources to do something about it. A new partnership between high schools, community colleges, and the California Energy Commission aims to change that.

The Cerritos Community College District’s Advanced Transportation Technology and Energy Center was awarded $1 million to increase career awareness in the clean fuels transportation field for high school students in underserved communities — regions impacted by poor air quality and those serving minority populations.

Eight high schools are participating in the project. Those confirmed thus far are:

  • Artesia High School (Lakewood, CA – Los Angeles/Orange County region)
  • Clovis West High School (Fresno, CA — Central Valley region)
  • Davis High School (Davis, CA – Greater Sacramento region)
  • Gunn High School (Palo Alto, CA – Bay Area region)
  • Mira Mesa High School (San Diego, CA)
  • Schurr High School (Montebello, CA – Los Angeles/Orange County region)
  • Valley High School (Santa Ana, CA – Orange County region)
  • Victor Valley High School (Victorville, CA – Inland Empire region)

Funded high school programs will offer clean fuels technology training to students, introduce opportunities to students who may not have considered a career in clean fuels transportation, and encourage interested students to matriculate into well-established community college programs to continue their studies.
