Vacaville Unified School District Technicians at High Voltage Familiarization Training

The ATL project team is making significant strides towards developing additional electric school bus courses and training electric school bus technicians across California.

The team is working to create comprehensive training courses that cover all aspects of electric bus technology, from battery management to charging infrastructure.

The complete training series includes six courses:

  • High Voltage Familiarization
  • Heavy Duty Electrical 1 – Electrical principles, circuits & testing
  • Heavy Duty Electrical 2 – Batteries, electronic control systems & sensor technology
  • Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) and Electric Vehicle Charging Systems
  • CAN Bus System (in development)
  • Bus Operator Familiarization (in development)

Designed to Meet the Needs of Both New and Experienced Technicians

These courses are designed to meet the needs of both new and experienced technicians and bus operators, ensuring that everyone has the skills and knowledge necessary to work on these cutting-edge vehicles. Funding from the California Energy Commission (CEC) enables technicians to receive this training at no cost.

Trained community college faculty traveled to more than 24 school districts last fall to deliver the High Voltage Familiarization course to technicians who work on these buses. Participants said the training was very informative and their managers appreciated it being held at their school sites. More than 165 technicians have received electric school bus training so far, with additional training to continue throughout the year.

While the training program was initially offered to school districts participating in the CEC’s Electric School Bus Replacement program, it is being expanded to include all districts across the state.  An informational webinar will be held on March 27, 2023 to discuss how interested districts can receive this series of training courses either at their sites or at a community college in their area, at no cost.

Technicians and managers can get all of the details and register for the webinar here.
