Open House Showcases Aviation Program at Cypress College

From pilots to flight attendants to security personnel, the Aviation and Travel Careers program at Cypress College prepares students for a variety of career pathways.

Those programs and pathways were highlighted at an open house for prospective students and families on August 25. Department Chair Ed Valdez said the event drew about 40 people ranging from high school students to working adults who are looking to make a career change.

Delta Air Lines has selected San Diego Miramar College as one of its thirty-eight schools nationwide that will assist the air carrier in providing qualified aircraft maintenance technicians.

“In order to prepare for the hiring need, Delta Air Lines has created partnerships with 38 aircraft maintenance technician schools,” said Joe McDermott, managing director cabin maintenance, training, safety and support services at Delta Air Lines. “Over the last several months, Delta TechOps evaluated these schools and found that they were determined to meet FAA standards as well as Delta’s high principles that exceed industry standards.”

Job growth in the aviation industry is expected to be strong over the next several years, with more than 600 jobs opening annually across all aviation occupations in Los Angeles and Orange Counties.

San Bernardino Airport employees work toward FAA airframe and power plant certification at nearby campus.

Leaders at San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) listened to feedback from employers asking for classes to be offered during the evening to accommodate students who work during the day.
The newly-launched evening aeronautics program will prepare students currently working as mechanics helpers to receive FAA A&P certification in two and a half years. Twenty students are currently enrolled in the lecture class and 18 students are enrolled in the lab. Read More →

For the past 20 years the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) has provided summer internship opportunities to 11th and 12th grade high school students who are transit dependent, reside in Los Angeles County, live close to a Metro Rail station and whose schools are located near existing or future Metro Rail lines.
The Transportation Career Academy Program (TCAP) offers high school students an opportunity to learn about careers in transportation and enables students to apply classroom theories and concepts to “real-world” work situations at the nation’s third busiest public transportation agency. Read More →

HVAC was the subject of 13 internships completed by College of the Desert (COD) students throughout the last academic year.

COD partnered with the JW Marriott in Palm Desert, the Coachella Valley Water District, and Carl’s Jr./CLK to place interns from its Air Conditioning/HVAC program.
The majority of the internships were in facilities maintenance, HVAC installation and repair, environmental controls technology, and solar energy. The Del Grande Dealer Group (DGDG) is one of the largest car dealers in the Bay Area, with 15 dealerships across the region. The company has enjoyed a strong relationship with the Bay Area’s ATRE program dating back to 2014 when they worked with Pam Gutman, Bay Area CETI Deputy Sector Navigator on an Energy Efficiency project.
