ESB Online Training Now Available!

ATL, in partnership with the California Energy Commission, has developed a series of online training courses for electric school bus technicians and operators in California. This series is available at no cost to school districts in California.

Introduction to Electric Vehicles (3 Parts)

Course Topics:

Part 1

  • ICE Electrical System Components
  • Conventional Vehicle Powertrain Architecture
  • Hybrid Vehicles
  • Electric Vehicle Power and Propulsion Systems

Part 2

  • Electric Vehicle Energy Storage Systems

Part 3

  • Electric Vehicle Architecture, Motors and Controllers

High Voltage Vehicle Safety

Course Objectives

  • Define high voltage and explain how to identify high voltage circuits
  • Explain the dangers of working with high voltage for a technician
  • Explain the need for PPE, when it’s required, and explain proper selection and inspection requirements
  • Describe high voltage school bus systems and  components
  • Explain proper DMM (including test leads) selection, categories and types
  • Identify proper procedures to “safe down” high voltage systems found on electric school busses
  • Explain the operation of high voltage interlock loops and other safety systems used on electric school busses.

Medium/Heavy Duty Electrical 1: Electrical Principles, Circuits & Testing

Course Overview:

This course is designed to provide technicians with an understanding of basic electrical principles, common electrical components, circuit construction, digital multimeter operation and testing, wiring schematics, circuit tracing and troubleshooting of common circuit malfunctions. Emphasis will be placed on circuit diagnosis using wiring schematics and digital multimeter data. Participants will receive both lecture and hands-on instruction.

Course Topics:

  • Electrical terms and definitions
  • Basic circuit construction and components
  • Circuit types and characteristics
  • Digital multimeter operation and circuit connections
  • Types of circuit faults
  • Wiring diagrams and symbols
  • Tracing current flow
  • Relay operation
  • High side and low side control
  • Diagnosing electrical circuit malfunctions

Medium/Heavy Duty Electrical 2: Advanced Diagnostics & Automotive Communication Systems

Course Overview:

This course is designed to improve technicians’ understanding of the advanced electrical systems found on electric school busses. Emphasis will be placed on advanced digital multimeter functions, computer input and output circuits, electric school bus communication, and hands on circuit measurement and diagnostic practice.

Course Topics:

  • Intermediate level diagnosis of electrical systems using wiring schematics
  • Frequency, pulse width and duty cycle
  • Advanced meter functions
  • Computer control fundamentals
  • Common sensors (inputs)
  • Common actuators (outputs)

Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment and Electric Vehicle Charging Systems

Course Overview:

This course covers Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment and electric vehicle charging systems. Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) charge levels, types, and connections will be reviewed. Emphasis will be placed on; communication between vehicle and charger, circuit inspection using digital multimeters and oscilloscopes, and “no-charge” diagnosis. Participants will receive both lecture and hands-on instruction.

Course Topics:

  • Basic Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) system operation
  • Requirements for EVSE installation
  • Charger types and charge levels
  • AC and DC charging
  • Common EVSE charge cable connectors
  • Calculating charge rate and time
  • Factors affecting charge rate
  • Proximity Pilot circuit operation
  • Control Pilot circuit operation
  • Circuit inspection and testing using digital multimeters and digital storge oscilloscopes
  • Vehicle on-board chargers
  • Diagnosing “no-charge” concerns
