Community of Practice – ATL Webinar #2

Best Practices for Teaching Aviation During Campus Closures

On Friday, May 15, ATL held the first Aviation Webinar focusing on best practices for teaching aviation and aeronautics classes during this time of campus closures. Our faculty panel discussed the transition to online teaching and options for dealing with lab-based instruction.

These questions were addressed:
  • What resources are being used to help with the transition to remote instruction?
  • How are campuses delivering lab-based instruction?
  • What is still needed to deliver high-quality learning experiences for students?

You would have to use the FSIMS 8900 guidance for approval of online in a standard program. That computer access specified can only be overcome by issuing student computer hardware and having a dedicated network.

From Rob Newman to Everyone: 01:47 PM
Is this session purely focused on aviation maintenance programs? Will there be any portion devoted to pilot training programs?

From Don Woods to Everyone: 01:48 PM
Part 91 pilot training. Any suggestions?

Good protocol. Can we make those kinds of terms as syllabus conditions?

From Robert Pettyjohn to Everyone: 01:59 PM
Probably HIPPA considerations as well

From Melissa McPeters to Everyone: 02:03 PM
Maybe a school nurse or RN student nearing graduation can take the temperatures each morning.

From Jack Little to Everyone: 02:04 PM
Chaffey faculty have proposed the same concept for the fall semester. We have a large lab environment that would promote social distancing, therefore holding lectures in the lab, temperature monitoring, regular cleaning/disinfecting throughout the day, etc.

From David Casillas to Everyone: 02:06 PM

From Jaime Gonzalez to Everyone: 02:08 PM
The ATL team is open to suggestions for future webinars that focus on specific areas of aviation, such as pilot training programs

From Tom Burg – Sac City Aviation to Everyone: 02:25 PM
Question: Our FAA emergency TCO deviation specifically states that the deviation is not an authorization to start any new entrants into the program. Is that the same as what is coming from the FSDO’s?
