According to the National Commission on writing, a person’s inability to write is the number one barrier to receiving a promotion at work. We all know that, no matter what industry you are in or what your job title is, clear and easy-to-understand writing is essential for success.
“While we focus a great deal on technical skills in automotive and advanced transportation classes, writing is also a critical skill for these students,” said Jannet Malig, Statewide Director for the Advanced Transportation and Logistics Sector of the California Community Colleges.
Though today’s students write more than ever, thanks to texting and online messaging apps, they often lack experience when it comes to evidence-based writing or constructing an argument. Mozi, a platform from California-based Core Innovate, aims to change that.
Mozi walks students step-by-step through the structure of an argument and displays their status along the way. Students can work with instructors to see what’s needed to improve their writing, rather than waiting until the end of an assignment to receive feedback along with their grade.
The platform’s data reports allow instructors to track student learning outcomes and automate some of the feedback process — giving teachers more time to focus on classroom instruction.
California Community College faculty are already using Mozi to assist their students. Jeremiah Allen, an English instructor at West LA College, said it’s his “go-to resource” for developmental writing courses.
“It has not only helped me support them, but it has virtually eliminated plagiarism,” Allen said. “When students submit their first drafts through MOZI, I get a coherent argument and a launchpad for improving the quality of their writing.”
