More than 300 students from throughout Orange County visited Saddleback College in May to learn about a variety of opportunities within the Advanced Transportation & Logistics Sector.
Odyssey Day covered everything from advanced manufacturing and automotive technology to culinary arts and graphic design.
Raj Dhillon, Senior Lab Technician in Advanced Technology and Applied Science, coordinated the event and said it surpassed his expectations for attendance and student interest.
“The results were astounding from just bringing students to campus and getting them to do little workshops,” Dhillon said.
Those workshops included building simple circuits with light bulbs and power switches and learning how to use a penny to test tire treadwear.
“We brought in a club that has a Model T to demonstrate the automobile’s past, and showed the future with hybrid buses and electric cars,” Dhillon said.
Saddleback’s automotive technology department coordinated the event, with support from Vital Link of Orange County, a nonprofit that prepares students for future careers through experiential learning opportunities.
Every student who attended Odyssey Day received a T-Shirt with the college’s logo that Dhillon hopes will help spread the word about Saddleback and the event as students share pictures on social media.
He hopes to keep the momentum going at a car show on October 25. Students and families will be invited to come to the college and see alternative fuel vehicles while learning about the programs offered at Saddleback.
