ATRE Drone Donation Enhances Learning at Rosamond High School
By Sean Riley, Rosamond High School Robotics Advisor
Thanks to our generous donor, Peter Davis from the Advanced Transportation and Renewable Energy Sector (ATRE), the Rosamond High School Robotics Club has taken flight.
ATRE donated five Phantom 3 drones to our robotics club and high school. With these drones, students will learn many valuable lessons in STEM fields. Through hands-on experience, they will learn what it takes to program, build, reverse engineer and more using the donated Phantom 3’s. In addition to helping students learn, the drones are also great fun. Adding this aspect to education motivates students to learn about drones without even realizing they’re learning.
We are working toward achieving several goals using the drones. Our current objectives are to host the first ever High School Drone Race this August with a custom built drone and to work toward our students’ acquisition of the FAA’s Small Unmanned Aircraft Pilot’s license.
Students Discover Many Uses for Drones on Campus
Rosamond High School has really embraced the addition of drones to our school. They are being utilized to enrich current curriculum and create more classes in STEM fields. For example, we have added an Airframe Manufacturing class and are using the drones to demonstrate how lift and other related topics work.
We have also partnered with our video production and yearbook teachers to aide them in aerial views of their projects and taking senior pictures.
The students working on our High School’s Video bulletin wanted a unique way to capture their take on the “Mannequin Challenge,” so we used the drones to record a video of the students partaking in this.
