ATL Sector Holds Electric Vehicle Training for Freeway Service Patrol

More than 50 tow truck drivers and other personnel from the California Freeway Service Patrol (FSP) gathered together in March for training on how to assist electric and alternative fuel vehicles in their work.

​The FSP is a joint program provided by the California Department of Transportation, California Highway Patrol (CHP), and local transportation agencies. It is a free service of privately-owned tow trucks that patrol designated routes on busy freeways and address incidents that cause congestion.

The training provided tow truck operators with an overview of how servicing alternative fuel vehicles differs from assisting gasoline-powered cars and trucks. It covered how to jumpstart electric and hybrid vehicles, how to move them if they’re blocking traffic, and other roadside assistance tips. Read More →

Switch Vehicle Brings Change to Davis High School

CA Energy Commission Awarded High Schools

To date, 143 students from seven funded schools responded to a career interest survey developed by the Clean Fuels Technology program team.

Instructors shared the Google Form link with their automotive students who responded to three questions shown below with survey results:

  1. What careers interest you?
    • 67 students (47%) are interested in a career in the automotive industry.
  1. What strengths do you have that will help you succeed in your chosen career?
    • 30 students (21%) already have experience working with vehicles (identified as a strength).
  1. How will this class help you move forward in your career path?
    • Teaches technical skills/hands-on experience: 60 students (42%).
    • Teaches soft skills (communication, teamwork, etc.): 20 students (14%).
    • Prepares students for career in automotive industry: 31 students (21%).

Faculty Reflect on Switch Vehicle Implementation

CA Energy Commission Awarded High SchoolsOver the past few years, Switch electric vehicles have transformed the way automotive education is taught at high schools across the state.

We asked a few high school instructors to reflect on some of their lessons learned from adopting Switch vehicles at their schools.

Robert Thayer at Davis High School said students love working on the vehicles and they are a great way to engage students if your school has the expertise and facilities to maintain them. He recommends painting or powder coating the parts before working with them. Read More →

VVUHSD Students Drive Toward the Future

Drone Classes Filling Near Capacity at San Diego Miramar College

Nearly 200 students took courses in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, more commonly known as drones, at San Diego Miramar College in the 2018-19 academic year.

The college began offering drone courses in spring 2018 and now offers a Remote Pilot Certificate of Performance. From spring 2018-spring 2019, 95 students completed Remote Pilot Ground School in preparation for FAA certification.

Greater Los Angeles New Car Dealers Association Strengthens Partnership with ATL Sector

A career fair and awards ceremony organized earlier this year by the Greater Los Angeles New Car Dealers Association (GLANCDA) are part of the organization’s ongoing commitment to supporting career and technical education.

The association hosted a career fair February 21 at the Pacific Palms Resort City of Industry. The event gave students from Rio Hondo College, Citrus College, and Cerritos College the opportunity to network with more than a dozen dealerships and dealer groups throughout the region. Read More →

Monterey Peninsula College (MPC) hosted its Tenth Annual Automotive High School Skills Challenge Day on April 12, 2019.

Automotive students from six local high schools from Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito Counties competed for awards in hands-on events such as:

  • Vehicle Maintenance Inspections
  • Automotive Parts Identification
  • Electrical Diagnostic Challenge
  • Wheel Rotation Test
  • A Technical ASE Style Exam
