A Conversation Between Automotive Instructors and Dealership Managers
This Community of Practice meeting was specifically for the automotive faculty in the Inland Empire/Desert Region and dealership managers. It provided an opportunity for dialog with a major employer on the impact of COVID-19, the status of their workforce, and safety measures for customers and technicians. Suggestions for automotive labs were also discussed.

Best Practices for Teaching Heavy Duty Vehicles During Campus Closures
On May 22, ATL hosted a special Heavy Duty Vehicles Webinar which focused on best practices for delivering heavy-duty vehicle training during this time of campus closures. Our faculty panel from across the state discussed the transition to online teaching and options for dealing with lab-based instruction.
Questions addressed were:
- What resources are being used to help with the transition to remote instruction?
- How are campuses delivering lab-based instruction?
- What is still needed to deliver high-quality learning experiences for students?

@Sergio, Hartnell has IT that holds “Office hours” for these students. This doesn’t help for the “right not situation” but it helps for the upcoming weekly meetings.

As for using tools and working on various vehicle systems, our students always wear gloves during their labs. So why do we need to worry about the shared tools and disinfecting the tools and parts? If they break a glove, get a new one and clean whatever they touched. We can’t or shouldn’t use chlorine for a disinfectant with our steel parts. Amonium is an approved CDC disinfectant.

@John gloves can be tricky, because as they touch various things through the shop/class they are cross-contaminating everything they touch. IF they touch their stuff or their face, gloves are really useless, unless they change them constantly and are aware of what they touch

Has anyone found a good online program for demonstrating Voltage drop? I used to have a Caterpillar program on Laserdisc, but the player is broken. It had a circuit, and showed a virtual DMM and the students had to set the DMM and choose where to place the probes.

On Friday, May 15, ATL held the first Aviation Webinar focusing on best practices for teaching aviation and aeronautics classes during this time of campus closures. Our faculty panel discussed the transition to online teaching and options for dealing with lab-based instruction.

Chaffey faculty have proposed the same concept for the fall semester. We have a large lab environment that would promote social distancing, therefore holding lectures in the lab, temperature monitoring, regular cleaning/disinfecting throughout the day, etc.

Best Practices for Teaching Auto During Campus Closures
On Friday, May 1, the Advanced Transportation and Logistics Sector was pleased to introduce a new Community of Practice for California Community College educators teaching automotive courses. This provided a unique opportunity for faculty members to connect with their peers and share information and experiences around teaching during the current Coronavirus disruption.
This first webinar focused on best practices for teaching automotive classes during this time of campus closures. Included was a faculty panel from across the state to discuss the transition to online teaching and options for dealing with lab-based instruction.
These questions were addressed:
- What resources are being used to help with the transition to remote instruction?
- How are campuses delivering lab-based instruction?
- What is still needed to deliver high-quality learning experiences for students?

Remind is good because it keeps a record of all conversations…if there’s ever a question about appropriate contact with students, it helps (probably more important for high school instructors but still valuable).
